About Airdrie Lioness

Our Mission is to provide service to our community and its citizens. All year long members of the Airdrie Lioness Club work hard to operate or to contribute to worthwhile community programs. We have been doing so since 1977.

How We Help

We provide a number of services and support in Airdrie. Quite often you will see our red vested Lioness members helping out at the Blood Donor Clinics or acting as an Ambassador for Airdrie at various city wide sporting events. Your children or grand-children just might be having fun while on playground equipment donated by us while you are watching them from a donated bench.

In addition to supporting various groups in Airdrie some of the programs we have include the Blankets 4 Kids. By far our largest one is our annual Christmas Hamper Program. It is interesting to note that our club is manned by volunteers with no paid members.

Blankets 4 Kids Program

In January 2014, the Airdrie Lioness Hamper Foundation created a new program called the Blankets 4 Kids Program.

Airdrie is not yet equipped to care for our really sick kids so they are often sent to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Children from birth to just over one year will be in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), and those from one month to 17 years of age will be in the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit).

These two units are areas in the hospital which provide sick kids with the highest levels of care. It differs from other parts of the hospital in that PICU allows intensive nursing care and monitoring things like heart rate, breathing and blood pressure around the clock. They are also able to perform life saving surgeries within the PICU itself such as putting a child on ECMO.

The kids are often confined to bed for long periods of time. So to make them a little more comfortable we are making fleece blankets that they can lay on. Each blanket is handmade with love and is meant to offer comfort, a touch of home and love from a stranger to a patient and their family in difficult situations in the hospital. These blankets are for them to keep and to take home with them when they are well enough to leave.
